Two Way Mirrors

Bring science to life with items found at home!

Sometimes, we simply have to make our own entertainment! Here is a list of science projects I have created to do at home or in the classroom!

True Mirror

Summary:

What is a True Mirror? A True Mirror is a device that contains two mirrors at a 90 degree angle. The purpose of a true mirror is to allow you to see yourself the way people see you.

How does it work? When you look into a mirror you see a backwards reflection. For example, if you hold up an object that has text on it in front of a mirror, the text will be backwards.

But, when you have a True Mirror, the text shows up how you would see it if you were looking directly at it! It’s TRUE reflection.

You can also adjust the angles of the two mirrors to change the amount of times you see the object (Double Mirror Lesson Plan below).

Objective:

Build your own True Mirror and compare reflections.

Materials:

➼Two (2) First Surface Mirrors (Standard mirrors could work, but the project will have lower quality)

➼Tape

➼Paper with writing on it.

Instruction:

  1. Take your two (2) first surface mirrors

2. Put them at a 90 degree angle and tape them together.

3. Hold the paper or object with writing on it.

Step by step guides and worksheets I created:

Light Reflection

Summary:

Mirrors are designed to show a reflection. In this activity, you will be able to see how mirrors affect the direction of light. This will be the reflection of light a mirror supports.

Materials:

➼Flashlight

➼Mirror (You can use a first surface mirror or standard mirror)

➼Dark Room

Instruction:

Follow the step-by-step lesson plan I have created.

Mirror Symmetry:

Summary:

Mirrors provide an exact reflection of what is held in front of it. Although the image is backwards, it still is reflected. When you hold half of an object in front of a mirror, it will reflect the other half. Thus, giving the illusion of the full image when only half is present.

Materials:

➼Mirror

➼Worksheet Provided (or you can make your own)

Instruction:

Follow the lesson plan I have created:

Mirror-like Objects:

Summary:

You can see your reflection in more than just a mirror! Some objects, such as water, can act as a mirror. This activity allows you to use what is around you to discover different types of reflections.

Materials:

The Law of Reflection and Plane Mirrors (video)

➼KWL worksheet (provided below)

➼Compare and Contrast sheet (provided below)

➼Writing Utensil

➼Examples of Reflections

➼Mirrored Reflection worksheet (provided below)

Instructions:

Follow the guide I have created.

Infinity Mirror

Summary:

An infinity mirror is an illusion that utilizes two mirrors. A standard mirror is placed on the bottom, and a two way mirror is placed on top. When lights are in-between the mirrors, they are reflected an infinite amount of times.

Materials:

➼Standard Mirror

➼Two Way Mirror

➼Frame

➼LED lights

Instructions:

  1. Lay the frame down with the front facing the floor.
  2. Place the two way mirror in the frame. Make sure the reflection side is facing you. It is important to have the reflection side facing the standard mirror for the best reflection rate.
  3. Place LED’s around the frame.
  4. Place the standard mirror. Make sure the back of the mirror is facing you, so the reflective side is facing the two way mirror.

For a DIY Tutorial, here is a video showing you the process!
