Infinity mirrors create an optical illusion of a long tunnel. It uses two mirrors, a regular standard mirror or a first surface mirror, and a two-way mirror. Once you combine those with LED lights, you have yourself an infinity mirror.

How to make your own DIY Infinity Mirror

It’s quite simple to make a DIY Infinity Mirror Project if you were to know how. Below you will find a step-by-step guide to create your very own Infinity Mirror project.

Materials

Creating an Infinity Mirror project is easy if you were to know how. You will need : A two-way mirror (Two-way mirror film) frame, LED Lights, and a standard mirror.

Choosing the best Glass

You will need to find the best glass to use to get the infinite tunnel illusion, to start your project.

First is picking your Two Way Mirror glass or film, and also the standard mirror. Two Way Mirrors are a semi-transparent mirror. This means that 70% of the light will be reflected, while 11% is transparent. The two parable mirrors will impact the effect with the distance between the two.

  • Max size recommended is 12″ x 24″ for 1/8″ thickness

Infinity Mirror Film:

Infinity Mirror Film is a directional two way mirror film. It has a mirror on one side while the other side is non reflective. Mirror films are reflective on both sides while this film creates clear viewing. Infinity Mirror film can be used on clear glass to create an Infinity Mirror.

The film is a great budget option. Notice that the mirror quality is much foggier, not as crisp as the glass and acrylic options.

Dielectric Mirror:

The Dielectric Mirror also can provide an infinity illusion. This glass would be excellent for projects that need a larger clear glass case then utilize only a portion of the mirror for an infinity effect.

Choosing the best standard mirror for the bottom layer

One huge advantage to use Acrylic on the bottom layer is if you want to add a unique shape inside. Acrylic is easy to drill into, so you can hide the wires and plug it in . Any of the semi-transparent two way mirrors can be used to get a wide variety of special effects.

Custom Mirror:

The Custom Mirror has an excellent chrome polish that allows light to surround a room. This is to create the effect of a larger space. Brighten up your room by letting natural light bounce throughout your area.

First Surface Mirror:

The Glass First Surface Mirror has an optical grade mirror coating on the top of the glass. This minimizes distortion for the best reflection possible. This is ideal to use when you want to avoid double images or ghosting appearance.

Acrylic First Surface Mirror:

The Acrylic First Surface Mirror has a mirror coating on top of the glass. Standard mirrors has the mirror coating on the bottom. This mirror prevents ghosting, and a double image-standard mirror provides.

Choosing the best lighting & frame options

You can’t achieve your perfect illusion without picking your lights! LED lights provide quick and convenient results when applying it.

LED Lights are a must-have when you create your Infinity Mirror since that is a big part of the illusion. With their small size, LED lights are easy to measure to the length you need and cut down to size for your piece’s frame. They come in a variety of options in both size and color. You can buy single-colored, multicolored, and remote-controlled colored LEDs. Most can even pair with Alexa and Google Home for voice command. Plus app-controlled features.

Choosing which lighting would be best for your next project comes down to what you’re looking at. Any LED Light stripe with work, but we recommend using a very bright light strip.

Framing Options

If you’re content with a predefined size, the IKEA Ribba is the right choice for an inexpensive frame. Or, you can buy shadowbox frames molding. You can make this simple by buying a premade shadow box with an inch depth to display your lights. The only change you’ll need to make is carving out a slot for your battery to pack its wires out of your frame.

Start with the kind of wood you want to work with using. We chose to keep things simple and use a pre-made frame to save time during our building process.
